How tall can a fence be in Toronto?
On a house lot, a fence can be 2.0 m tall in most places, only 1.2 m in the front yard within 2.4 m of the street, and 2.5 m beside a street, a public walkway or a property that isn’t residential. Near a driveway it must be see-through. Answer three questions for yours.

Always
- Height is measured anywhere along the fence, from the average ground level 1 m out on each side (447-1.2 B(1)).
- No barbed wire, chicken wire or other sharp material on a house-lot fence, no sheet or corrugated metal, and no electric fence (447-1.2 A).
- A hedge or shrub that acts as a fence counts too: 1.2 m in the front yard near the street, 2.0 m beside a driveway near a side street, no limit elsewhere (Table 1).
- A swimming pool needs a pool enclosure permit before you dig, and an enclosure at least 1.2 m high on a house lot (447-1.3).
- A taller fence needs a site-specific exemption from community council (447-1.5).
